BIS Certification for Furniture– Overview, Procedure, Documents, Govt. Fee
The Department of Commerce and Industry (DPIIT) has issued an order making it mandatory for several categories of furniture, whether manufactured in India or imported from other countries, to bear the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) quality mark and have a valid BIS license. This means that furniture manufacturers, both in India and abroad, must immediately apply for a BIS license and obtain a valid BIS certification for furniture covered under this order. It covers the requirements relating to the performance and safety, specifically strength, stability, and durability, of various types of furniture for both domestic and non-domestic use. BIS certification is only granted to manufacturers, not traders or retailers involved in marketing or distribution. Manufacturers operating in multiple locations must apply for a BIS License for each production unit.
BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification is a seal of quality and safety issued by the Government of India. In the case of furniture, this certification ensures that the product meets the standards set by BIS. Furniture Quality Control Order (QCO) is a regulatory measure enacted by the Government of India to ensure that furniture meets the established standards. In the case of furniture, QCO lays down the mandatory requirements that manufacturers must meet to ensure the safety and quality of their products.
